Independent clinical insight.
Practical workplace action.

When health and work overlap, we coordinate an independent occupational health assessment and help you turn the consented recommendations into a fair, workable management plan.

01 — THE RIGHT BOUNDARY

Managers need clear answers about work—not access to an employee's medical history.

An occupational health referral can help when absence, a health condition, return to work or capability creates questions a manager should not try to answer clinically. The assessment focuses on how health affects work and how work may affect health.

HR + SAFETY helps frame the referral, identify relevant job demands and ask focused, proportionate questions. A qualified independent occupational health clinician carries out the medical assessment. Clinical judgement and confidential clinical records remain with the occupational health provider.

The employee is told why they are being referred and the report is only released through the appropriate permission process. The employer receives relevant workplace advice—not unrestricted access to medical records.

02 — THE REFERRAL PATHWAY

A controlled route from management concern to practical action.

Each referral is scoped around the role, the workplace issue and the decision the employer needs to make.

01

Management referral brief

We help set out the reason for referral, relevant job demands, absence context and the specific employment questions that need an independent opinion.

02

Independent assessment

A qualified occupational health clinician meets the employee by telephone, video or in person where appropriate and available.

03

Work-focused report

Subject to the employee's permission, the employer receives advice on fitness for work, likely timescales, restrictions, adjustments, phased return or further review.

04

Consent and confidentiality

The employee is given a clear explanation of the referral and report process. Confidential clinical information remains controlled by the occupational health provider.

05

Management implementation

HR + SAFETY helps the employer consider the recommendations, plan the conversation, document decisions and put workable support or adjustments in place.

06

Review and follow-through

Where appropriate, we help review the return-to-work plan, agreed adjustments and whether updated clinical advice is genuinely needed.

03 — WHEN A REFERRAL HELPS

Use occupational health when the decision needs independent clinical input.

A sensible starting point

Begin with the management question—not the diagnosis.

Tell us the workplace issue, the role demands and the decision you need to make. Please do not send detailed medical records through the initial enquiry form. We agree the referral scope and customer price before assessment, explain what the employer and employee need to do, and provide the appropriate route for sensitive information.
